The Plein Art Paintout event featured artwork produced during a set time span. A similar activity will be part of this year’s Artists’ Market.

In an event that has drawn hundreds of participants in the past, Mt. Lebanon Partnership is once again sponsoring the Artists’ Market, which will kick off the fall season in the Uptown District.

Nearly 70 booths will headline the event on Academy Avenue, bringing artists to display professional-quality original art from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 24 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 25.

“These folks who attend are highly scrutinized and chosen over many applicants,” said Eric Milliron, Mt. Lebanon commercial districts manager. “We know that we have some of the best artists here to display their craft.”

Not only do the artists display their abilities, Mt. Lebanon has the opportunity to present what the Uptown District offers to those in attendance, since the Artists’ Market moved there from Mt. Lebanon Park when the partnership took over the event a few years ago.

“Moving it to the Uptown District helps create synergy with local businesses, and it is closer to the light rail to bring those in from outside of the municipality,” said Rebecca Wanovich, president of the partnership.

The market also will feature a twist of the highly-popular Plein Air Paint Out. From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, artists of all skill and experience levels can participate in the timed painting competition. Registration will take place at the Artists’ Market tent in the PNC Bank parking lot. Participants are required to bring all materials necessary. Awards will take place at 6 p.m.

A coloring contest for all ages of Rick Antolic’s “Pittsburgh: A Coloring Book” is continuing to take place in the municipality. All entries must be returned at the Mt. Lebanon Municipal Building lobby, Create a Frame/Handworks Gallery or at the Artists’ Market by noon on Sunday.

Accompanying the artwork at the market are seven food vendors: Arancini House, BRGR, Caustelot Creamery and Las Chicas, and on Saturday only, Mac & Gold Truck, PGH Halal Foods, LLC and Southside BBQ Co.

Entertainment will be provided by Pete Hewlett, a world-class singer who has toured and recorded with Billy Joel and Elton John, and Scott Anderson, an Emmy Award-winning composer and one of the most popular keyboard players in the Pittsburgh region.

“We have been told that this show rivals Three Rivers Arts Festival and A Fair in the Park in Shadyside in terms of quality,” said Wanovich. “We have artists from several hundred miles away coming to this.”
