Panel discussion

RSVP by Sept. 23 for “Being Mortal,” a panel event hosted by Presbyterian SeniorCare and Family Hospice. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at Hillsview Chapel, Washington, and will feature the video “Being Mortal” by Dr. Atul Gawande, followed by a discussion with a panel of professionals. AIC

The Adult Interest Center at Southminster Presbyterian Church, Mt. Lebanon, has reopened for the fall season. AIC offers entertainment, information, fellowship and a meal for older adults in the greater South Hills community. Programs are held on Fridays beginning at 11 a.m., and are free and open to all. Lunch is served at noon at a cost of $6. No reservations are required.

September programs include:

• “The Five Essential Friendships” with Christine Mabon, Sept. 23.

• “Cemetery Tales,” Sept. 30. Explore Pittsburgh’s picturesque cemeteries and learn about the notable and interesting Pittsburghers who lie beneath them.

Arthritis Expo

The Pittsburgh Arthritis Expo will be held Sept. 24 at the Regional Learning Alliance in Cranberry Township. More than 2.9 million Pennsylvanians have arthritis, including 11,500 children.

Giant Eagle Specialty Pharmacy is a partner of the 2016 Pittsburgh Arthritis Expo, presented by UPMC.

The Pittsburgh Arthritis Expo is a free opportunity to access the latest information on the diagnosis, treatment and management of arthritis and related diseases. It will include educational sessions led by local health care experts and a light lunch. On-site check-in and exhibits open at 8 a.m. Educational sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required. Family Hospice

Family Hospice and Palliative Care will host a memorial boat cruise aboard the Gateway Clipper from 9:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 24. The fundraising event celebrates the memory of relatives and friends. Guests receive a breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, fruit, danish, croissants, coffee, tea and juice, courtesy of Friends of Anne Mullaney. In addition, they will get a memorial flower to keep or cast into the water and a $10 coupon from Buca di Beppo to use at the Station Square or Robinson locations. The two-hour cruise will offer time for fellowship, viewing of a tribute video of loved ones’ photos and other activities for both adults and kids. • Family Hospice and Palliative Care and Home Instead Senior Care will present the second, third and fourth programs in an educational series titled “Approaching the Unapproachable: Finding Peace in Preparedness.” All presentations are free and will be held at Family Hospice in Mt. Lebanon. Attend one or all of the programs, which focus on important concerns at the end of life. Light refreshments will be served. The final three programs will include: “A Conversation about Cremations and Celebrations,” 10 to 11 a.m. Oct. 3, featuring Christine Crompton, community outreach coordinator for John F. Slater Funeral Home; “Funeral Trends: Past, Present and Future,” 4 to 5 p.m. Oct. 20, with speaker Pete McQuillin of the Funeral Consumers Alliance Speakers Bureau; “Honoring Those Who Served: Veterans’ Care and Assistance,” 2 to 3 p.m. Nov. 4, co-presented by Scott Beinhauer, director of operations for Beinhauer Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, and Ron Hestdalen, director of National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

Chabad of the South Hills

A Pre-High Holiday Seniors Luncheon is planned for noon Sept. 28 at Chabad of the South Hills, Mt. Lebanon. There will be a special guest speaker, shofar-making demonstration, holiday-themed music and honey cake.

• Seniors in the Sukkah will take place at noon Oct. 19. Enjoy lunch, music, a chance to shake the Lulav and Etrog, and a special holiday program.

Senior fair

State Rep. Dan Miller, D-Mt. Lebanon, will hold a senior fair from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 29 at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, Mt. Lebanon.

Theatrical-minded seniors needed

Better Than Ever Independents, also known as the Sassy Seniors, is a senior citizen theatrical group that performs vaudeville-type shows at nursing homes, AARP meetings and more. New members ages 50 and older are needed. The group’s current show is titled “The Fabulous Fifties.” There will also be a Christmas show, with performances beginning in November. Chair exercises

Chair Exercises for Seniors takes place 11 a.m. to noon Tuesdays at Scott Township Library. Space is limited for the DVD-directed program. To register, call 412-429-5380.
