Commercial growth to continue along popular South Fayette corridor

As per the wishes of many in South Fayette Township, more commercial growth is planned for a main corridor of the community.
Township commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 21 to approve both the South Fayette Commons and Fairfield Inn and Suites site plans, allowing for a continued presence of businesses on both sides of Route 50.
“We are very fortunate to have an I-79 interchange right in our community,” said Andrea Iglar, township community development director. “It’s a great spot for businesses to locate to. We are glad to put resources toward beneficial development of that corridor.”
Township manager Ryan Eggleston noted the importance of both getting businesses on the tax rolls and providing a more eye-pleasing entrance to the community.
South Fayette Commons will include a Dunkin’ Donuts, Washington Financial Bank and yet-to-be-identified restaurant, while the five-story Fairfield Inn and Suites would allow travelers easy access to Interstate 79.
An issue that remains is the large amount of traffic that flows through the corridor, frequently reating delays.
“We hear from residents that improving traffic is very important, and those concerns are being heard,” said Iglar.
South Fayette Commons will pay a traffic impact fee that is tentatively planned to be used on a study of improving nearby Hickory Grade Road.
The township continues to work on traffic task force projects and remains in contact with the State Department of Transportation, but there is no timeline on improving the heavily traveled roads.
