AIC
The Adult Interest Center at Southminster Presbyterian Church, Mt. Lebanon, has reopened for the fall season. AIC offers entertainment, information, fellowship and a meal for older adults in the greater South Hills community. Programs are held on Fridays beginning at 11 a.m., and are free and open to all. Lunch is served at noon at a cost of $6. No reservations are required. On Sept. 30, explore Pittsburgh’s picturesque cemeteries and learn about the notable and interesting Pittsburgers who lie beneath them at the program “Cemetery Tales.” For more information, call AIC director Carla Campbell at 412-343-8900.
Educational series
Family Hospice and Palliative Care and Home Instead Senior Care will present the second, third and fourth programs in an educational series titled “Approaching the Unapproachable: Finding Peace in Preparedness.” All presentations are free and will be held at Family Hospice in Mt. Lebanon. Attend one or all of the programs, which focus on important concerns at the end of life. Light refreshments will be served. The final three programs will include: “A Conversation about Cremations and Celebrations,” 10 to 11 a.m. Oct. 3, featuring Christine Crompton, community outreach coordinator for John F. Slater Funeral Home; “Funeral Trends: Past, Present and Future,” 4 to 5 p.m. Oct. 20, with speaker Pete McQuillin of the Funeral Consumers Alliance Speakers Bureau; “Honoring Those Who Served: Veterans’ Care and Assistance,” 2 to 3 p.m. Nov. 4, presented by Scott Beinhauer, director of operations for Beinhauer Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, and Ron Hestdalen, director of National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

Trial study/education
Trial Study and Education for Seniors will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 12 at Christ United Methodist Church, Bethel Park. The study seeks at least 25 folks who are 65 or older to participate in a one-hour seminar on the importance of influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations among older adults. The seminar will be presented by nursing practitioner doctoral student Jennifer Blomgren from the University of Pittsburgh, who is passionate about reaching people through faith communities. Basic demographic data will be collected. A pre- and post-test will be administered, along with a two-month followup contact. Register through the church office at 412-835-6621.
Theatrical-minded seniors
Better Than Ever Independents, also known as the Sassy Seniors, is a senior citizen theatrical group that performs vaudeville-type shows at nursing homes, AARP meetings and more. New members ages 50 and older are needed. The group’s current show is titled “The Fabulous Fifties.” There will also be a Christmas show, with performances beginning in November. Chair exercises
Chair Exercises for Seniors takes place from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesdays at Scott Township Library. Space is limited for the DVD-directed program. To register, call 412-429-5380.
TOPS Weight loss
