The Mt. Lebanon commissioners unanimously approved bids for the 2017 road reconstruction and maintenance programs during their March 27 meeting.

After receiving several bids, Merante Contracting Inc. was awarded to the reconstruction work on nine roadways, along with various drainage improvements for $1.997 million.

The following streets will see a complete reconstruction:

• Broadmoor Avenue

• Eisenhower Drive

• Firwood Drive

• Lovingston Drive

• Maplewood Drive

• Mayfair Drive

• Oxford Boulevard

• Pinewood Drive

• Richland Road

“There were four bidders,” municipal engineer Dan Deiseroth said. “We sometimes have a tough time selling this project because certain bidders get frustrated. We just wanted to make sure we were able to get other people interested. The bids were very tight and extremely close. We feel good that they can do the work and are ready to go upon award.”

That base bid also included approved alternates to add drainage improvements to Eisenhower, Mayfair and Firwood drives, along with Richland Road.

Various streets around the municipality will get a facelift with the Street Maintenance Program, which will include the milling of existing materials and resurfacing with bituminous materials at various depths.

The project, funded through the transportation portion of the operating budget, was awarded to Mele & Mele & Sons Inc. in the amount of $309,551.

According to public works director Rudy Sukal, information will be posted on the municipality’s website similar to last year as to what particular areas being worked on and an approximation as to when construction may occur.

With curb work beginning almost immediately, Sukal anticipates road reconstruction to begin in May. He also said the mill and overlay procedure to other streets could begin in June.

Work to fix the roads adjacent to Mt. Lebanon School District’s buildings is expected to be complete during summer break.
