Behind the record-breaking performance of Sam Mastro, South Fayette captured the boys’ title during the Tri-state Track Coaches Association’s outdoor championships held April 8 at West Mifflin.

Mastro shattered the school record in the discus as the Lions finished first in the team standings with 67 points. Penn Hills (64) and Butler (52) followed in second and third place. In addition to capturing the gold in the discus with a toss of 179 feet, 2 inches, Mastro also won the shot put with a throw measuring 51 fee, 3 inches. Peters Township’s Doug Halo followed Mastro with silver in the discus and bronze in the shot put.

Mastro’s teammate, Thayer Phillips, collected bronze medals in the javelin and discus. Phillips, who added fifth in the shot put, broke the school record for the javelin with his throw of 165 fee, 4 inches.

The Lions added another victory in the 4×800 relay. Silas Mays, Trevor Kulenich, Joe Cavanaugh and Sam Snodgrass combined for the win in 8:24.65. Individually, Snodgrass took runner-up honors in the 1,600-meter run and May was fourth in the 800 race. With fourth and sixth in the triple and long jump, Luke Meindl also contributed to SF’s team score.

Meanwhile the Mt. Lebanon girls finished third in the team standings with a 58 score. The Blue Devils used a strong showing in relay action to solidify their spot.

The 4×100 relay team of Patrice Smith, Flynn Begor, Jane Chaves and Molly Mangan dominated, winning the race in 50.79. Lebo’s 4×400 relay team of Margo de Abreu, Chavez, Aoife-Ruby Dunne and Mangan secured second place. The 4×800 team of Smith, Dunne, de Abreu and Rory Vigrass placed third.

Individually, Flynn finished third in the high hurdles while Mangan was second in the 100-meter dash.

Jessie Wolf was the sole individual champion for the Lebo girls. She won the high jump.

Other area champions included Harvey Kane from Upper St. Clair, Courtney Phoenik from South Fayette and Nate Everhardt from Mt. Lebanon. Kane won the high jump while Phoenik took the gold in the triple jump. She also placed second in the long jump. Everhardt snagged the gold in the 800-meter run.

James Krandel of Bethel Park submitted a strong showing in the sprints, securing the silver medal in the 100-meter dash (11.46) and helping the Hawks’ 4×100 relay team to victory.

Other top performances at the meet included:

• Elias Zajicek from Chartiers Valley placing third in the 800 run.

• Rachel Helbling of South Fayette securing silver and bronze respectively in the 400 and 200 dashes.

• Logan Runco of Bethel Park, third in the 400 dash.

• Laura Ehrenberger from Peters Township, second in the 800.

• Shaun Hay, a Peters Township resident that attends Winchester Thurston, second in the 3,200.

• Tarr Czar from Chartiers Valley, third in the 3,200.

• Rebecca Libell of Bethel Park, third in the pole vault.

• Hailey Bair from South Fayette, third in high jump.
