Canon-McMillan captures team titles at county track meet
Canon-McMillan captured the boys’ and girls’ team titles during the Washington-Greene County Coaches Track Meet held at Big Mac Stadium in Canonsburg.
Chyna Beck and Tamara Mathis paced the Lady Macs, who won the title with 206 points. Trinity (122) and Peters Township (118) followed in second and third place. Both were double winners.
Beck led a 1-2 showing with Cerena McBride in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. The senior also claimed gold in the 200-meter dash. Beck also secured silver medals in the high hurdles and the triple jump. The Duquesne recruit finished runner-up in both events to Bentworth’s Brenna Cavanaugh, who garnered Overall MVP honors.
“I knew coming in (Brenna) was a very good hurdler,” Beck said. “It was so back and forth. I knew she was tremendous at long jump and at hurdles. She pushed me to do that well.”
In her first year running track, Mathis did equally well. The sophomore sprinted to gold, silver and bronze medals in the 400, 200 and 100 dashes. She also anchored the 4×100 relay team of Maddy Kappeler, Skylar Sobansky and Kaitlyn Hannigan to victory.
The Lady Macs also placed first in the 3,200 relay. That foursome consisted of Morgan Grudi, Margaret Veres, Stephanie Keelon and Rachel Kohler.
Additionally, Cerena McBride collected silver medals in the high jump and the intermediate hurdles.
On the boys’ side, C-M dominated the relay action to help win the team title with 171.5 points. Waynesburg and Washington finished second and third in the team standings with score totals of 94 and 87.5 points.
Damon Gall, Jonas Wudkwych, Glenn McGee and Tyler Meier combined to win the 3,200 relay. Alonzo Lemus, Jason Fowlkes, Tiequan Bewak and Kamden Martin comprised the gold-medal 4×100 relay team.
Devin Fortna captured co-MVP honors with Isaiah Robinson of Washington. The C-M freshman finished second in the triple jump and collected, fourth-place ribbons in the high jump, long jump and high hurdles.
Individually, Martin coasted to victory in the 100-meter dash.
Laura Ehrenberger dominated the distance events. The Peters Township senior won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 races. For her efforts, Ehrenberger earned Track MVP honors at the meet.
“I think I did well,” Ehrenberger said. “I had some good times and I was happy. There were a lot of people in the (1,600) relay and I felt pushed. I don’t usually run the 400 so that was exciting. I want to focus on the mile and the 800.”
Ehrenberger’s times of 2:26.13, 5:31.01 and 11:57.38 put her in the Top 10 for each event. The marks should also be good enough to qualify her for the WPIAL championships set for May 18 at Baldwin.
Several other Peters Township individuals fared well at the meet.
Doug Halo won the discus while Anthony Well captured first in the pole vault. Caroline Fyock won the shot put and took third in the discus. Malaree Scott won the pole vault for the ladies.
