Helicopter used to inspect West Penn Power electrical lines

Area residents may have noticed a black helicopter flying over power lines Aug 31.
However, there was nothing to be alarmed about, according to West Penn Power’s spokesman Todd Meyers.
The helicopter was being used to perform aerial transmission line inspections in Peters Township, Charleroi, Cecil Township, Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair, South Fayette and Yukon.
The inspections were necessary to identify damage or issues that could lead to service interruptions in West Penn Power’s 1,700-mile transmission area, according to a news release from Meyers. An experienced observer accompanied the pilot to identify any areas that will need repairs.
The low-flying helicopter, which also flew over the area Aug. 30, flew directly above structures or specific areas to get a better look at any problems, such as damaged wire, broken cross arms, failed insulators and other problems not visible from the ground.
Inspections of the entire grid are expected to be completed in 10 days, weather permitting.
