A plan to redevelop the area around Walmart and Giant Eagle garnered another approval from Bethel Park Council.

Brixmor Property Group of New York City, the company that owns Bethel Park Shopping Center, wants to demolish several smaller shops on the edge of its property on Library Road and replace them with five new buildings.

The project will be done in several phases and it should take about five years to complete.

Council approved the first two phases last month and it approved the third and final phase at a special meeting Dec. 18.

The plaza’s main tenants, Walmart and Giant Eagle, will not be affected, nor will the Wendy’s restaurant at the corner of Library and Brightwood roads. Other adjacent buildings, such as ones that house Firestone Complete Auto Care, Rice Inn, Rita’s Italian Ice and Game Stop, will be razed and replaced. Work should begin in the spring.

The building that houses Firestone Complete Auto Care might be the first to be demolished and replaced with a new structure.

Council also approved Ameri-Source’s plans to expand its metal manufacturing facility in the industrial park. The company makes graphite and metal products, such as rods and hoses, for various industries.

It plans to build a new 22,493-square-foot addition to its building at 2901 Industrial Blvd. The addition will bring its total work area to over 59,000 square feet.
