Bethel Park going blue for police
Houses in Bethel Park are lit up with many different colored lights for the holiday season, but one municipal official hopes residents will consider having a blue light shining just after Christmas to honor police officers.
Jan. 9 marks National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and Councilman Joe Consolmagno wants Bethel Park to celebrate in a big way.
The Nov. 17 murder of New Kensington police Officer Brian Shaw called attention to the perils of that job and stressed the need to thank Bethel Park’s officers, Consolmagno said.
“We need to do something for our police officers,” he said.
Residents can show their support by placing a blue light in a window or replacing a bulb in their porch fixture with a blue bulb. Most hardware stores sell blue bulbs, Consolmagno said.
A banner showing support for the police will be on display at the library and residents are encouraged to sign it. Lunch or dinner will be provided for the police department Jan. 9. Schoolchildren will be encouraged to draw a picture or write a letter in support of the police.
