People: Week of Feb. 1

Mary Williams, a Bridgeville native and current resident at Washington Commons Personal Care Facility, celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 26 at a party with her friends at the facility. Williams grew up in a large family consisting of four brothers and seven sisters, one of whom passed away at a young age. Today she and two other siblings are the only ones remaining. She was baptized at St. Barbara Church and later attended Mass at Holy Child, formally St. Agatha Church. As a child she enjoyed dancing and appeared in a pageant. In 1956, Williams and her husband moved their family to Peters Township. She enjoyed being active in church, bowling as a member of a traveling team, cooking and baking. Most of all she enjoyed creating mangers and villages out of ceramics. She would meet with women at her house to complete various craft projects. Her daughter, Rita, said, “As a matter of fact, I had my manger scene and villages that she made me up at Christmas time. She didn’t drive but she was always able to get where she needed to be.” Helping Williams to celebrate her milestone birthday were her daughter, Rita, and a son, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
