Doug Vitale suffered severe injuries in Afghanistan.

The fifth annual Match For A Marine will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 when Peters Township hosts Mt. Lebanon in high school wrestling. The fundraiser benefits Sgt. Doug Vitale.

Before he became a Marine, Vitale was a wrestler. Shortly after marrying PT graduate Alexis Abraham and moving to North Carolina, the Kiski Area and Slippery Rock graduate was deployed to Afghanistan. While on patrol in the autumn of 2011, Vitale stepped on an improvised explosive device. In addition to blowing off both legs, the detonation caused a traumatic brain injury to Vitale. A year after his injuries, Vitale suffered several strokes, lost his ability to speak and his motor control, and is only able to communicate through facial expressions.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Doug Vitale Fund. The goal this year is to raise funds for supports and accessories for Vitale’s wheelchair so he can enjoy increased outdoor activities.

Local first responders will also be recognized during the event.

Groups from the community, students, athletic teams, clubs, faculty and support staff are also encouraged to participate and create a poster in support of the military and first responders to decorate the gym and hallway during the event. T-shirts will also be sold for the event.

Donations can be made to: Doug Vitale Fund c/o First National Bank, 3539 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317. Write “Match4Marine” on check memo.
