Peters Township Meals on Wheels seeks volunteer drivers for winter

Since 1974, Meals on Wheels of Peters Township has been dedicated to helping senior citizens and other homebound individuals to meet their nutritional needs throughout the year.
During the winter, Meals on Wheels faces a shortage of drivers to deliver meals, as some volunteers are out of town or have health challenges of their own. The need is immediate for volunteer drivers to fill the void. Training is provided, and schedules are flexible. Drivers can volunteer once a week or every other week, on a seasonal or year-around basis, or as an as-needed substitute. They pick up meals from the Meals on Wheels kitchen at 10:30 a.m. weekdays and are finished with their routes by about 12:30 p.m.
Meals on Wheels will close if road conditions are too treacherous. The clients are provided with emergency “blizzard bags” or extra meals in advance to prepare for closures.
The program has delivery routes in a wide circle of communities, including Peters, Canonsburg, Houston, Lawrence and parts of Eighty Four, Finleyville, Bridgeville, Fayette, Bethel Park, and Upper St. Clair.
Meals on Wheels currently operates on the top floor of the Peters Township Fire Department, but will need to relocate before the end of 2017 as the township has not renewed the lease. Plans are progressing toward a lease agreement for the former Sirena Taco Joint at Donaldson’s Crossroads shopping center, which Meals on Wheels hopes to secure as its new home.
