South Fayette students have moved into three newly renovated sections of the high school as classes are now being conducted in areas A, F and H.

The renovation of those areas has been successful so far, Joe Brennan of contracting company PJ Dick told the South Fayette School Board during its Jan. 17 workshop meeting.

“I haven’t heard anything negative,” Brennan said. “I think everything is running smoothly.”

Brennan presented the board with an update regarding the construction project at the high school that included $124,800 in change orders for this month. The most costly of which was a $72,857 change request for over excavation in area E next to the auditorium.

The board requested Brennan’s presence during their executive session to discuss a costly mistake. Casework, which was supposed to be placed under the windows in one area of the building, was unable to be installed because it would not fit around the ductwork. That casework is being repurposed in other areas of the building and the contractor and Eckles Architecture have admitted to the mistake. South Fayette School District will receive a credit when that case work is repurposed.

The cost of removal for a tree near the stadium parking lot, the replacement of vinyl shades for fabric shades, relocation of sprinklers in the childcare area, upgrades to the phone and PA system, and the incorrect placement of chord reels in several classrooms also contributed to the high cost of change orders presented.

Also discussed at the board meeting was the schedule for the 2017-18 budget approval. A proposed preliminary budget was to be posted Jan. 23. The preliminary budget is set to be approved at the first meeting of the school board in February, which has been moved to Feb. 13.

The Jan. 24 school board meeting, at which the preliminary budget will be reviewed, has been relocated to the high school conference center. Board Appreciation will take place at 6 p.m., followed by the board’s regular meeting at 7 p.m.
