South Fayette forms sub-committee to discuss dog run zones at parks
The South Fayette commissioners during their Jan. 18 meeting approved the formation of a sub-committee of the township’s Parks and Recreation Board to investigate potential solutions to the closure of the dog free-run zone at Fairview Park.
The off-leash zone was closed in November after an incident in which a small dog was injured by an off-leash dog. Residents and commissioners were interested in exploring other options for off-leash areas in South Fayette Parks.
The new sub-committee will report findings and suggestions to the Parks and Recreation Board, which would then be referred to the commissioners for final approval.
“I’m looking forward to hearing the ideas,” Commissioner Jessica Cardillo said. “I want to work with residents and get their input on what we can do in the best possible way, the safest way.”
The new committee will be assembled at the next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board on Feb. 7.
Also during the Jan. 18 meeting, township Manager Ryan Eggleston presented the commissioners with information regarding a potential ordinance requiring brick to be included in all new construction and development projects in the township.
The board approved Eggleston’s request to present the Planning Commission with several similar ordinances to review before adoption of something like that would be considered in South Fayette.
Meanwhile, a proposed ordinance that would enforce a one-year period of action following a special exception or conditional use is granted by South Fayette Township was sent back for review by the Zoning Hearing Board after a discussion with Allegheny County officials. The county has requested a five-year protection period on conditional use granted to land development projects.
The South Fayette Township commissioners voted to table the potential ordinance until it has been reviewed and approved by the Zoning Hearing Board.
