South Fayette High School renovation to finish on time
The renovation of South Fayette High School is expected to be completed on time.
Joe Brennan, construction manager from PJ Dick and Eckles Architecture, updated the South Fayette School Board during its meeting July 18 that the project is wrapping up.
Superintendent Bille Rondinelli said after two years of renovations, the project should be finished by the upcoming academic school year, which begins Aug. 21.
“We anticipate that everything is going to be done on time for the opening of school with students,” she said. “They may still be doing a little bit of work while teachers are here for their opening day, but we do expect there to be no issues.”
The board discussed hosting a rededication and tours of the high school at some point after the school year begins.
“I think it would be a good opportunity for people in the community to see what the high school looks like,” Rondinelli said.
Steve Timmins, manager of custodial services, presented to the board the new design for the basketball gym at the high school. The new gym floor will be mostly stained rather than painted, which Timmins said will preserve the court’s design better.
Rondinelli then discussed enrollment, which has continued to increase since 2005. She said the current projected enrollment is 3,142 with seven more students to be added and an addition 24 outsourced students. The final projected tally of 3,173 students is yet another increase from the 2016-17 school year’s enrollment of 3,104.
The board projects the high school to have 899 students, with the middle school, intermediate school and elementary school having enrollments of 783, 776 and 864, respectively.
The board also discussed personnel decisions for the 2017-18 school year in executive session and voted on the following.
Along with approving the hiring of several teachers to each building, the board also approved the reappointment of Matt Bacco, who serves as the girls’ basketball coach at South Fayette, as assistant athletic director. Board member Teresa Burroughs voted no, but declined to comment why.
The board also unanimously approved the reappointment of Cynthia Geisler as board secretary.
