LETTER: Congressman Murphy working hard to fund Alzheimer’s research
It is with gratitude that I recognize Congressman Tim Murphy for his commitment in the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease.
In May, Congressman Murphy voted in support of a historic increase in Alzheimer’s research funding and cosponsored the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (PCHETA). Both of these actions are vital to the more than 5 million Americans who live with Alzheimer’s disease today and in meeting the goal of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease which is to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer’s by 2025.
Alzheimer’s disease is the only leading cause of death without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. This year, the annual cost of caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s or other dementias will reach $259 billion, $175 billion of which comes in direct costs to Medicare and Medicaid.
Thankfully, Congress has taken action by approving a $400 million increase in Alzheimer’s research funding. Additionally, PCHETA was reintroduced in Congress, which would ensure America has an adequate, well-trained palliative care workforce.
Palliative care and hospice are critical services for persons in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, and other terminal illnesses. Access to quality end of life services makes a devastating diagnosis slightly more manageable.
