Peters Township’s Hay silver & bronze at states

Abby Hay picked up two medals and the Peters Township boys earned a Top 10 finish during the PIAA swimming championships held March 18-19 at Bucknell University.

Hay collected a silver medal in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:55.27, behind PIAA champion, Anna Kalandadze from Lower Merion (4:48.29). The Peters Township sophomore also brought home the bronze in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.12).

Hay also combined with Carly Frizzell, Cassidy Sweeney and Olivia Yocca for a Top 16 showing in the medley relay. The unit placed 15th.

Meanwhile, the PT boys placed ninth in the Class AAA competition while the Upper St. Clair boys finished 13th. North Allegheny ran away with the title, racking 271 points.

The results are not official until the diving portion of the competition is completed. The PIAA will host the diving finals March 25-26 at Bucknell University.

Stephen Hopta submitted the top individual performances for the Indians, placing eighth in the 100-yard backstroke. He helped the 400 free relay team of Jake Rose, Benon Brewer and Mitchell Golias to a ninth-place finish. His 200 medley relay team of John Martin, Paul Luniewski and Mike Kehm placed seventh.

PT’s foursome of Kehm, Brewer, Golias and Rose finished fifth in the 200 free relay.

Individually, Kehm had a Top 16 time in the 100-yard freestyle.

For the USC boys, Jack Fitzpatrick picked up fourth in the back and seventh in the IM. He helped the medley relay team of Nick Mudry, Jacob Jaime and Brandon Novak to an eighth-place showing.

Individually, Mudry placed 13th in the IM.

The Mt. Lebanon boys placed two relays in the Top 16. Jack Cusick, Peter Victor, Sergio Coury and Jack Rice comprised the 400 free relay while Coury, Victor, Petru Mihailescu and Rice made up the medley relay.

USC’s Abby Matheny captured fourth place in the 200 free. The junior, who clocked a 1:50.21 in the race, also submitted a Top 10 finish in the 500 free (5:00.41).

Individually, Maeve Lersch added a Top 16 showing in the back.

Lersch and Matheny combined with Lauren Connors and Olivia Shaffer for ninth place in the 200 free relay.
