LETTER: Peters should reconsider school pool
I read with interest and empathy the recent debate on the potential of a new pool for Peter’s Township High School. School board President Thomas McMurray’s point is well taken but myopic.
Although a natatorium is not academically required, a comprehensive education includes all aspects of learning including extracurricular activities. Extensive research has documented the need for students to feel a connection with school and that includes the many athletes who benefit from competition, discipline and teamwork.
A swimming pool, like similar facilities, is a revenue source. WPIAL events, corporate activities and community celebrations are often scheduled in these facilities and bring in impressive revenue through rental fees, advertising and concessions to defray the cost of pool operations.
Finally, swim scholarships for college continue to be an attractive incentive for students to excel in the water. Before automatically red lining such a project, I urge the board of school directors to research this matter further. My previous district has embarked on a similar initiative for a new athletic arena.
Businesses have purchased naming rights, the alumni swung into action and raised $1 million for the project and area businesses donated in kind services. It has made it much easier for the board to agree to finance the balance of the project and tremendous community spirit has ensued.
