Free virtual camps

PA Distance Learning Charter School is offering fun educational camps this summer for all Pennsylvania students in grades K-9. These camps will provide a world of learning opportunities for only one hour each day for one week. Due to a limited number of openings for each camp, parents are encouraged to register early. Kits for hands-on activities will be sent to students prior to the start of camp so that all students have the necessary supplies. Non-PA Distance students will have to provide their own computer, but the online classroom and activities will be easily accessible on the web. There is no limit to the number of camps students are allowed to attend, but there are a limited number of seats for each camp. Registration will close on May 26. Theatre

Little Lake Theatre Company announces its 2017 summer camp programs for children and teens. All programs will be held at Little Lake Theatre, 500 Lakeside Dr., Canonsburg. This year’s summer camp programs have been redesigned and expanded to offer a wider range of acting and technical training for children and teens. In addition to Acting Camp, new camps have been added, including: Improv (June 19-23), Be a Star (June 26-30), Behind the Scenes (July 24-28), Musical Theatre (Session 1: July 17-21, Session 2: (July 31-Aug. 4) and Teen (July 24-Aug. 2). Bereavement camp

Family Hospice and Palliative Care welcomes grieving children ages six to 12 and their family members to participate in Camp Healing Hearts, a free one-day bereavement camp set for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 17 at Carlow University, Pittsburgh. Camp Healing Hearts gives a safe and supportive environment for children and families to express feelings, remember a loved one, develop coping skills and create bonds and friendships with others who have experienced a similar loss. Camp Healing Hearts is staffed by licensed professionals from Family Hospice and trained volunteers. Throughout the day, children will participate in structured activities, including art, memory boxes, movement, music and pet therapy, as they remember their loved ones and learn healthy ways to grieve. Continental breakfast and lunch included. Preregistration is required. Each child who would like to attend the camp must complete an application by June 2. STREAM

Excellence in STREAM education continues at Our Lady of Grace School, Scott, this summer for students entering grades K-6. Camp Invention, a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, will take place June 19-23 and is open to students from all schools. Brass Camp

This summer, pay musical tribute to heroes, both the super and everyday variety, at Brass Camp 2017: Summon the Heroes. Open to all brass musicians in elementary, middle and high school Brass Camp rehearsals will take place June 25, July 2, 9, 16 and 23 at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Bridgeville. Rehearsal times are: Intermediate Ensemble (grades 5-6), 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.; Junior High Ensemble (grades 7-9), 1:45 to 3 p.m.; Senior High Ensemble (grades 10-12), 3:15 to 5 p.m. Brass Camp will culminate in a public concert set for 7:30 p.m. July 24 at South Fayette Middle School. Musical selections will include the themes of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, a medley of classic television heroes, a salute to our heroes of the Armed Forces and more. Cost is $40. Science

Westminster College is teaming up with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the II-VI Foundation this July to host the Summer Science Splash Camp, a residential camp for middle-school students starting seventh, eighth and ninth grades this fall. Campers will spend their days immersed in scientific observations and experiments while exploring innovative technologies and the natural world in sessions led by Westminster faculty and assisted by Westminster students. In the evenings, campers can participate in games, sports, arts, hanging out with new friends and more science. Campers do not need to have an advanced understanding of science to attend, but they are highly encouraged to be excited and motivated to learn. Two sessions will be available to choose from, July 9-14 or July 16-21. Registration for both sessions is available now at www.westminster.edu/sciencecamp. Cost per camper is $350 and includes a week of science instruction, lodging, meals, snacks, supervised activities, camp shirts and a variety of other prizes.
