Connor Bruce finished fourth in the PIAA Class AAA singles tournament. The Peters Township freshman lost to Lower Merion’s Matt Chen, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in the consolation match played May 27 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
Bruce had reached the Final Four with victories against Dan Kliebhan from Council Rock North, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round and Bailey Harris of Abington Hegiths, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Bruce succumbed to Matt Robinson of Lower Merion, 6-3, 6-3. Robinson finished as runner-up, falling to Downingtown East’s Michael Dickson, 6-1, 6-3, in the championship match.
During the Class AAA doubles tournament, the Upper St. Clair tandem of Kevin Kwok and Liam Gibbons dropped a two-setter, 7-6 (4), 6-3, to Bryan Szyana and Danny Katz from Upper Dublin in the opening match.
Bruce was the WPIAL singles champion while Kwok and Gibbons combined for the District 7 doubles title. While Kwok is also an underclassman, like Bruce, Gibbons is a senior. He will play tennis at Bucknell while pursuing a career in medicine.
