Boil water advisory issued for South Hills communities

A boil water advisory was put into effect Nov. 6 for at least 100,000 customers in Allegheny and Washington counties, including people living in several South Hills communities.
The advisory announced by Pennsylvania American Water affected customers in more than 50 communities, including South Fayette, Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, South Park, North Fayette, Peters Township, Canonsburg and Cecil. Township. Mt. Lebanon is not included in the advisory.
Potable water tanks for those residents were set up at the Bethel Park Community Center, South Fayette Township Library, Upper St Clair Community Recreation Center and Peters Township Municipal Building. People are asked to bring their own containers to fill with water.
The company said water samples showed turbidity levels, or cloudiness, above normal standards. The high turbidity level indicated a possibility that the water might contain disease-causing organisms. While it initially was expected to be in effect for 48 hours, the company later changed it to “until further notice.”
Pennsylvania American Water said people should boil water for at least one minute before consuming it or using it to cool. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food.
The company said it will inform customers when the water is safe to consume, but people can also call customer service at 1-800-565-7292.
