Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Green Tree
A dead raccoon found in Green Tree last month has tested positive for rabies, according to the Allegheny County Health Department.
County officials said the animal tested positive for the disease after two dogs killed it in the 1200 block of Glencoe Avenue. The raccoon never came in contact with humans and the two dogs already were vaccinated for rabies.
County health Director Karen Hacker warned residents in and around Green Tree to be careful if they see wild or stray animals in their neighborhood.
“If any animal appears to be acting strange or becomes threatening, residents should notify their local animal control service, the police or the Pennsylvania Game Commission immediately,” Hacker said.
Anyone who is bitten, scratched or exposed to saliva from a stray or wild animal should immediately cleanse the contact area with soap and water before seeking emergency medical treatment. The Allegheny County Health Department also should be notified of the incident by calling 412-687-ACHD.
