Mental health. Racism. LGBTQI.

Most people have strong opinions about these topics, but maybe not direct experience with them, said Jonathan D’Amico. That’s why his congregation, Beloved, is joining with First United Methodist Church of Bridgeville to present “Listening for the Future,” a series of panel discussions about issues that need to be heard in order to move into the future.

“We’re bringing people together to share their story, giving people the opportunity to listen and interact,” he said. “We’re trying to make a positive impact, and giving people a chance to hear stories that matter.”

D’Amico said the idea to host a community discussion was born after he heard someone give an opinion about President Trump’s border wall.

“A lot of people have these ideas that are just sort of programmed,” he said. “But it takes people being knowledgeable … to move forward.”

Storytelling is so powerful, D’Amico said, that when we hear a story, rather than read it, our ability to empathize increases. He’s hoping stories from knowledgeable panelists will increase participants’ understanding of difficult issues.

The first panel, Opioids and Mental Health, will be held April 21 and includes John Hopper and Mike Markley, co-founders of Harmony Life Center; Kelly McKevitt, executive director of SPHS Behavioral Health; and individuals in recovery.

“A lot of other conversations need to occur,” D’Amico said. “We feel like, with the first season, other ideas will develop.”

The series will be held at First United Methodist, 244 Station St., Bridgeville, where Beloved meets.

The following panel discussions, which start at 7 p.m., are open to the public:

  • Opioids and mental health, April 21
  • LGBTQI, May 19
  • Islamic faith, June 23
  • Refugees and immigration, Aug. 18
  • Racism in America, Sept. 15
  • We’re All in This Together, Oct. 20
