A Peters Township man was killed in a Feb. 6 crash on Interstate 79 at the northbound Racetrack Road off-ramp.

State police are investigating the two-vehicle crash that killed Matthew Edward Johns, 37, of Golfview Drive, according to a Washington County coroner’s report.

According to the report, Johns was driving an SUV and was traveling down the off-ramp “at a high rate of speed.” Johns’ vehicle rear-ended a sedan before rolling into a ditch.

He was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The cause of death is still pending, according to the coroner’s report.

The driver of the other vehicle, who also had one passenger, suffered minor injuries, police said.

The northbound off-ramp closed for about two hours while state police investigated the crash.

Ambulance and Chair Service, UPMC Paramedic Response Unit and the South Strabane fire department assisted at the scene, according to the report.
