A distribution center for Carvana, an online car dealership, is being proposed for Newbury Market in South Fayette.
The South Fayette planning commission approved Carvana’s site plan during its Jan. 25 meeting, and the commissioners are expected to vote on whether or not to approve the plan at their Feb. 21 meeting.
“We’re glad to see business moving forward at Newbury Market,” said Andrea Iglar, the township’s community development director. “With Carvana and TopGolf, we’re hoping to see more tenants move into that development.”
Customers can shop at Carvana.com, where they search for their car by viewing 360-degree photo technology. Once purchased, customers can choose to have the car delivered or visit one of Carvana’s car “vending machines,” which is expected to be a feature at the Newbury site. Carvana claims the online system decreases the price of vehicles for customers and rids of the hassle of going to a traditional car dealership. To replace a test drive, car-buyers have a seven-day return policy at Carvana.
The Phoenix-based company, which launched in 2012, has seven other locations across the country.
If approved, the center would be built on a 1.2 acre lot at Newbury near the Bridgeville interchange to Interstate 79. The development has been on a rollercoaster ride in the past year after UPMC pulled out of its plans to build a hospital in Newbury. Carvana would join TopGolf as anchor tenants at the development.
