The annual Washington County Farm Bureau food drive is underway, and organizers are trying to increase last year’s collection total for the more than 25,000 county residents the Greater Washington County Food Bank has labeled “food insecure.”

Last year, 13,900 pounds of food was collected by the bureau. Organizers want to reach at least 14,000 pounds this year.

As in years past, food, personal care items, cleaning supplies and paper goods donated locally will go to the local food pantry, saving on transportation costs.

There will again be competitive elements. Libraries participating in the drive will vie for a cash prize, and 4-H clubs will also try to out-do each other.

“We’re encouraging people to buy local,” said Don Carter of the farm bureau.

The drive continues through March 31. Donated food must not be past its best-by or use-by date.
