For those who lack faith in prospects for the future, meet Fabi Shipley and Julie Booth.
Both are 19-year-old college sophomores, 2016 Mt. Lebanon High School graduates and passionate about trying to make a difference in the world.
As such, instead of observing the “break” part of winter break, they ventured beyond their comfort zones in early January to travel to areas where quality of life faces significant challenges.
Through John Carroll University’s Campus Ministry Immersion Experience Program, Julie traveled to El Salvador, Central America’s smallest nation and a place where crime, underemployment and disparity between the rich and poor are significant problems.
Fabi’s trip, in conjunction with the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concerns was to southern Arizona and the U.S.-Mexico border, where she learned why migrants leave their home countries, the struggles they encounter during the journey and how U.S. citizens are responding.
Both students are eager to share their stories, in hopes that what they have seen and heard can help others understand a bit more about some of the issues making today’s headlines.
