Construction on Route 50 and Washington Pike in South Fayette began July 11 and will continue through October.

Single-lane closures are expected to happen between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. or between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to avoid the height of traffic.

A. Folino Construction Inc. will complete the construction, and the Newbury Market development is funding it. Taxpayer dollars will not be used for the maintenance, township officials said.

The construction is a part of the Route 50 Task Force project, a group comprised of Allegheny County, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, local municipalities and state representatives.

The task force played a part in kickstarting the future PennDOT construction of the Route 50 and Washington Pike intersection and the bridge over Chartiers Creek. The bridge will increase from four lanes to seven lanes as means to alleviate one of the most congested areas in the South Hills.

The Chartiers Creek bridge project is expected to be completed in 2020.
