Mt. Lebanon School District to pursue full-time resource officer

Mt. Lebanon School District officials will discuss with the township about adding a full-time school resource officer for the 2018-19 school year.
The school board approved a resolution at the district’s June 18 regular meeting directing Superintendent Timothy Steinhauer to discuss the matter, although the resolution does not allow Steinhauer to authorize any agreement.
The board said about $65,000 could be set aside for the position, and Steinhauer added that the district is pursuing grant funds for the position as well.
“I’m cautious to put out a number because I don’t want to offend the (township) commission, and I certainly don’t want to commit the board to some number that you wouldn’t be comfortable with,” Steinhauer said.
The resolution directing Steinhauer to conduct the discussion was approved by eight members of the board, with William Cooper abstaining.
“I want a school resource officer, but I don’t want guns in the school,” he said.
