Fire heavily damaged a Carnegie restaurant March 2 and killed a maintenance worker who lived in an upstairs apartment of the building.

John Michael Wells, 64, died at UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh the day after a blaze gutted Papa J’s restaurant in the 400 block of Broadway Street in Carnegie, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office. The office ruled his death an accident caused by smoke inhalation.

The fire heavily damaged the rest of the three-story building and its upstairs apartments. It was not immediately known if or when the restaurant would reopen or whether the building’s apartments could be repaired.

The American Red Cross of Western Pennsylvania said it was assisting at least 13 residents displaced by the fire that damaged two buildings at Broadway and Main streets.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
