Four local middle schools recently competed and won big in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 28th National Science Bowl.

In one of the NSB’s regional competitions, Upper St. Clair’s Fort Couch Middle School, Peters Township Middle School, Bethel Park’s Independence Middle School and Ringgold Middle School competed against nearly 20 other schools in Pennsylvania for a chance to go to the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Competing in the March 3 contest from Independence were Allie Scarlett, Toyosi Egbebi, Alex Markunas, Alecko Fekos and Demetrios Fekos.

Fort Couch had two teams at the NSB, as Shana Reddy, Luka Misic, Shane Williams, Carter Chui, Matthew Earley, Dev Patel, Sujay Shah, Nitish Sharma and Adam Zheng all represented Upper St. Clair at the competition.

The competition tests students’ knowledge in science and math, and each team is comprised of four students, one alternate and a faculty adviser. Teams then battle against one another in a quick question-and-answer competition, with questions ranging from space science to physics. The nationwide competition includes more than 14,000 middle- and high-school students.

Marshall Middle School in Wexford won the regional competition and will be one of 113 middle schools to advance to nationals.
