Upper St. Clair will soon have two new businesses on McLaughlin Run Road.

The commissioners granted nonresidential unified conditional use/preliminary and final land development approval for a dog daycare business and a hair salon.

Brad Childs and his wife, Linda, plan to open The Dog Stop doggie daycare center beginning May 14. The Dog Stop will be located on the lower level of a two-story building at 1377 McLaughlin Run Road.

Brad Childs said there will be 43 suites in the facility, as well as an outdoor play area for the dogs located on a vacant lot next to the building. The play area has a special dog turf, which draws water and pet waste through it to reduce odor and prevent ponding.

The board approved a modification request for the outdoor play area and for an eight-foot high vinyl privacy fence around the outdoor play area.

In addition to modification for the outdoor play area and privacy fence, the board also approved a modification to the township’s sidewalk requirement. Land developers in the township must add sidewalks, but since there are no sidewalks along that area of McLaughlin Run, a contribution will be made to the sidewalk fund, which could be used to build sidewalks elsewhere in the township.

The board also approved a modification to the sidewalk requirement and a modification to the parking area at 1405 McLaughlin Run Road, the site of Vibe hair salon owned by Taylor Rebisa.

The applicant requested a modification of the township’s 13-foot turn around to a 10-foot turn around to avoid losing a parking space.

Vibe is expected to open before the end of May.

In other business, the board issued a proclamation recognizing May 20-26 as National Emergency Medical Services Week, and a proclamation recognizing Gabriella Spina for attaining her Girl Scouts Gold Award.

The board also issued a proclamation recognizing Upper St. Clair High School Swimmer Josh Matheny for his performance at the PIAA Boys’ Swimming championships, where he placed 1st in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Also honored with certificates were swimmers Jack Fitzpatrick, for his performance as highest point scorer at the PIAA Boys’ Swimming AAA championships, and Abby Matheny, who took 1st place in the Girls’ 200 freestyle at the WPIAL Girls’ Swimming AAA championships.
