South Fayette adds girls’ golf, boys’ volleyball to athletic slate

The South Fayette School Board approved a plan during its Nov. 27 meeting that will add a girls’ varsity golf team and a boys’ volleyball team to the district’s athletic offerings beginning next school year.
The district will pay the $11,900 cost of launching the girls’ golf squad, with the costs encompassing coaches, uniforms, transportation and start-up equipment. It will also pay $23,700 to cover similar costs for the boys volleyball team.
Athletic director Mark Keener asked board members in October to consider adding the teams. He also told the board he would have to notify WPIAL officials about the creation of the new teams by mid-January in order to schedule games for the next school year.
At the board’s Nov. 20 committee meeting, it signed off on the comprehensive plan the district must submit to the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Due by Nov. 30, it covers July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2022. The comprehensive plan identified two goals for the district: that it can accommodate the district’s growth “while being true to our mission and vision,” and that challenging curriculum will be offered to make students ready either for college or careers.
The district is also working on a strategic plan, which will likely cover such areas as fostering workplace and technological skills and the future of work.
