USC honors firefighters during Fire Prevention Week

Upper St. Clair commissioners honored six township firefighters for their years of service with the township’s volunteer fire department while also proclaiming Oct. 7-13 Fire Prevention Week in the township.
Michael Moore and Mark Krzywicki were recognized for 15 years, Drew Gerlach for 20 years, Jerry Kopach Jr. for 35 years, Dan Ferguson for 40 years, and Don DeLeo for 45 years of volunteer service.
Commissioner Robert Orchowski noted all of the hours members of the fire department spend training. For example, during a firefighter’s first year they train for close to 400 hours to gain “Firefighter 1” certification. Orchowski thanked the firefighters for their service to the community.
Also during their Oct. 1 meeting, the commissioners approved nonresidential unified conditional use/preliminary and final land development approval for Dean Car Wash at 1741 Painters Run Road. The property has one automatic car wash bay, four self-serve bays, and two vacant self-serve bays. The applicant, Rob D’Orazio, plans to convert one of the unused bays to another automatic bay by bumping out the rear of the bay 15 feet, which is why he sought conditional use approval. He also plans to convert the remaining bay into two 9-by-7-foot self-serve dog wash bays.
Mr. D’Orazio hopes to have the second automatic bay running by the winter, with plans for the dog wash bays to open by spring 2019.
In other business, the board approved a contract for $64,100 with A & H Equipment in Bridgeville to upgrade the township’s salt brine production system upgrade.
