Mt. Lebanon School Board unanimously voted to invest $1 million of district general funds for security infrastructure upgrades in each of its buildings.

Upgrades include door hardware, signage, laminate glass for windows and doors, upgraded communications, additional cameras and surveillance equipment and protective bollards.

“This is continuing on with our safety and security initiative here,” board President Michael Riemer said. “I think we are further ahead than most school districts, if not all.”

The upgrades are the first in a set of recommendations made to the district by Mt. Lebanon Police Department, which recently conducted a safety audit of the district’s 10 buildings. Current safety measures employed by the district include vestibules and security cameras.

Funding for the upgrades was transferred into the district’s capital fund and earmarked for security capital projects and equipment purchase.

Also during the meeting, the school board voted unanimously to renew Superintendent Timothy Steinhauer’s contract through to 2024. Steinhauer was appointed to the position in 2009.

Prior to voting, several board directors commended Steinhauer for his performance as superintendent, with Elaine Cappuci and William Cooper calling him the best they had worked with. Steinhauer thanked the board and his fellow school administrators for their support.

“The faith that this board and this community has put in me is at times overwhelming, but it is a role that I relish,” Steinhauer said.
