Even if she doesn’t golf, Carla Dorsey is excited to be out on the course.

Or anywhere else she’s needed, for that matter, as she prepares to volunteer for the 12th annual Charlie Ross Memorial Charity Invitational Golf Outing.

The event, scheduled for Sept. 21 at Lindenwood Golf Club in North Strabane Township, benefits Mainstay Life Services. In turn, the Scott Township-based nonprofit provides support for people who have development disabilities.

Carla, who has been receiving services since 1977, regularly volunteers to help with many of Mainstay’s events, and the golf outing long has been a favorite. She likes to greet visitors at the registration table and to tend to the course, such as smoothing out sand traps.

With support from the Mainstay staff, Carla is able to achieve a degree of independence and contribute to the community. For instance, she has been working full-time at the same Pittsburgh hotel since 1992.

“While Carla stays very busy with her job and traveling to visit family, we are very happy she continues to help out at our annual golf outing,” Dana Schutte, Mainstay chief operating officer, said. “Her contagious laughter never fails to light up a room and both the staff and golfers are happy to see her each year.”

Proceeds from the outing go toward services such as special therapies and medical needs, including dentures and eyeglasses; purchase of clothing and other personal items for those who otherwise would not be able to afford them; and the means to make accessibility improvements to homes.

The event begins with a shotgun start at noon. The cost is $200 per golfer or $800 per foursome and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, lunch and beverages during golf. Several skill contests are featured, including closest to the pin, longest drive and longest putt, plus the opportunity to win a new car with a hole-in-one.

The outing will conclude with appetizers and cocktails followed by a dinner, raffles and silent auction and prizes.

Charles Griffith Ross was a Vietnam War who retired from PNC Bank two years before his death in 2007. He served for 19 years on the board of Mainstay Life Services, formerly Horizon Homes, and was president from 1993-95.
