Unexpected complications resulted in about 400 Upper St. Clair residents losing water as Pennsylvania American Water crews repaired a water line that ruptured Sept. 19. The company expected full service to be restored by Sept. 21.

Traffic was restricted to one lane in the area of East McMurray and Bebout roads as crews worked on the water transmission line break Wednesday evening.

Pennsylvania American Water reported that a PennDOT contractor struck a 20-inch transmission line in the 600 block of East McMurray Road. About 100 Peters Township residents were without water for about 24 hours. Service was interrupted for the repair, and the company expected Peters Township customers with low or no water pressure would have service restored by Sept. 20.

Peters Township police Chief Douglas Grimes said the break was in a transmission line and not a water main and did not have a major impact on water to residents or the township. A transmission line carries water from one location to another without branching off onto side streets. The initial fear was the outage would be more widespread.

However, the water damaged the newly paved East McMurray Road, which will need repairs, Grimes said.
