Friends of Dormont Pool has an opportunity for area residents interested in preserving historic landmarks — and enjoying a night on the town.

The 13th annual Dormont Pub Tour is scheduled for April 27, beginning at 7 p.m. and features 11 establishments as the nonprofit organization’s major fundraising event.

Proceeds are generated through the sale of Pub Tour T-shirts, which feature a new design each year. The shirts are available prior to the event at participating taverns and online, and on the night of the event at the Pub Tour tent set up in the parking lot at West Liberty and Wisconsin avenues.

For the fourth year, Great Lakes Brewing Co. is the event’s main sponsor, as part of its Brewing Good community initiative. All of the taverns on the tour will carry two of the craft brewer’s staples, Elliott Ness amber lager and Dortmunder Gold lager.

“Some of the participating bars will be carrying more than that selection, but it’s guaranteed that at each location, they’ll have those two to choose from, at least,” said Krista Koller, Great Lakes field sales representative for Pittsburgh said

Based in Cleveland since its 1988 founding as Ohio’s first microbrewery, Great Lakes has had a 15-year presence in Western Pennsylvania, which now represents the company’s largest market outside of its home state. Koller, a lifelong Pittsburgh resident, said the company soon will have three full-time and two part-time employees dedicated to the region.

The region’s swimming enthusiasts may want to mark May 25 as the season opener for Dormont Pool, which will mark its centennial next year.

The Banksville Road landmark traces its origins to 1920, when a man named Andrew Philp used rocks to dam a creek for a wading pool. Two years later, the borough spent $6,851 to create a larger dam for a swimming area and an ice skating rink.

In 1923, borough officials decided to build a concrete pool, a project that took several years and had a budget of $14,867. The revamped pool and a new bathhouse were dedicated July 4, 1929.

Friends of Dormont Pool Inc. was established in 2006 to raise money to stave off the planned closure of the swimming facility. The nonprofit organization continues to help ensure the pool remains open each season.
