Sen. Iovino announces state grants
State Sen. Pam Iovino, D-Mt. Lebanon, announced two separate state grants that will improve opportunity for young people and families in and around the 37th Senatorial District.
The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, which operates 16 locations in the district, received $1,039,517 in tax credits through the Neighborhood Assistance Program’s Charitable Food Program. The credits can be claimed by those who donate to the food bank, providing incentive for monetary and food donations that feed and support families experiencing food insecurity in the food bank’s 11-county service area.
Holy Family Institute Nazareth Prep High School in Emsworth will receive $200,000 through Pennsylvania’s Training-to-Career program, a workforce development initiative that partners with local companies to train workers.
“Creating new opportunity for families can take many different forms, whether by helping young people obtain experience that will qualify them for skilled jobs in manufacturing, or by making sure parents don’t have to worry about putting food on the table and can focus on other priorities,” Iovino said.
The Neighborhood Assistance Program encourages private-sector investment into projects that will help improve distressed communities by providing tax credits to businesses that donate capital to support projects that address neighborhood and community problems.
Iovino also joined state Rep. Mike Puskaric, R-Elizabeth, in announcing grant funding to complete traffic safety upgrades along a main transportation artery and commercial corridor in South Park Township.
The township will receive $199,975 through the state Department of Transportation’s Automated Red Light Enforcement program to construct an auxiliary left-turn lane at the intersection of Library and Brownsville roads.
The project, which includes other safety upgrades such as the replacement of traffic signals, is estimated to cost $1.3 million in total and is designed to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians, ease traffic flow and enhance mobility.
