Upper St. Clair

• Upper St. Clair School District is launching a new extended teacher certification program for non-educators who are interested in serving as substitute teachers.

The program is aimed at those who hold a bachelor’s degree in any subject from an accredited college or university but do not have a Pennsylvania teaching certificate.

According to data from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the number of teaching certificates issued has declined more than 62% over the past eight years. As a result, there are fewer teacher candidates and, more pronounced, a substitute teacher shortage for many districts across the state.

Those interested in the ETC Program should plan to attend one of two informational meetings, at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14 in the Upper St. Clair High School LGI room – enter the school through the theater entrance – and 9:30 a.m. Jan. 23 in the district administration building. Each program is anticipated to last an hour.

For more information regarding the ETC Program or substitute teaching in Upper St. Clair School District, contact Judi Stemmler, human resources representative, at jstemmler@uscsd.k12.pa.us or 412-833-1600, extension 2289.
