Mt. Lebanon synagogue selects new senior rabbi

Rabbi Aaron Meyer
Temple Emanuel of the South Hills has named Rabbi Aaron Meyer as its next senior rabbi, after a unanimous recommendation of the search committee, approval by the board and a congregational vote.
Starting July 1, Meyer will hold the Rabbi Mark Joel Mahler Senior Rabbi Pulpit as he takes over the slot vacated by Rabbi Mahler, who retired in 2018 after 38 years. Rabbi Donald Rossoff has been serving as interim rabbi during the transitional period.
“Qualities that our congregation wanted in our new senior rabbi included being warm, caring, open-minded, inclusive and inspirational,” said David Weisberg, Temple Emanuel president. “Rabbi Aaron encompasses all of these characteristics and more. I am excited as we are leveraging our strengths now and for future generations.”
Meyer, an Erie native, served as an associate rabbi for more than seven years at Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Seattle, the largest Jewish congregation in the Pacific Northwest. He has extensive experience leading weekly and High Holiday services, leading active and diverse Torah study including educational programs for all levels and ages, as well as delivering relevant, meaningful sermons and messages tailored to a diverse audience.
He has a degree in science from Ohio State University, received his rabbinic ordination and earned a master of arts in Hebrew letters/literature from Hebrew Union College in Ohio, and holds a certificate in gerontology from the University of Washington. He and his wife, Rabbi Emily Meyer, have two children, Evelyn, 3, and Eli, two months.
Founded in 1951, Temple Emanuel is a Reform Jewish congregation in Mt. Lebanon.
