16th annual Farm Bureau food drive underway

Food bank donations peak around the holiday season, but who will meet the needs of the hungry during the winter and before the earliest crops begin appearing in the spring?
That’s a task the Washington County Farm Bureau has shouldered for the past several years.
Leading the effort formerly helmed by Don Carter will be Drew E. Ross Manko of Eighty Four, chairman of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers and Ranchers.
“Last year, the drive collected nearly 15,000 pounds of food,” so it’s been a very successful food drive, said Morgan Livingston, agricultural innovation manager at the Greater Washington County Food Bank near West Brownsville, at a recent meeting of the Washington County commissioners. “We believe the scale of their food drive is probably one of the largest in the state.”
There will be a weigh-in of contributions from the local 4-H and Future Farmers of America clubs at Washington County Ag Days in April, when they and local libraries will be competing for cash prizes.
Most-needed items include peanut butter, jelly, cereal, tuna, macaroni and cheese, canned meats, single-servings of food in pop-top cans, canned fruits, laundry detergent and postage stamps.
The food bank asks that donated items not be in glass containers.
