Pennsylvania Resources Council will introduce a series of “pop-up” glass recycling collection events in response to the removal of glass from many of the region’s residential curbside recycling programs.

The first event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 in the Village Square Mall parking lot.

Consumers can drop off all colors of glass bottles, jars and jugs at no cost.

PRC staff and volunteers will be at the site to offer assistance. Oxford Development is supporting the effort by offering the site on two occasions.

The pop-up glass recycling network is sponsored by CAP Glass of Mt. Pleasant, Straub Brewery of St. Marys and Owens-Illinois Inc., the largest manufacturer of glass containers in North America, in conjunction with local municipalities impacted by recent changes in curbside collection.

Other events scheduled, also from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

  • March 30 – Edgeworth Borough, site to be determined
  • April 6 – South Fayette Township Municipal Complex
  • April 13 – Dormont Pool
  • April 27 – Avalon Borough Park
  • May 11 – Village Square Mall
  • June 1 – Avonworth Park, Kilbuck Township
  • June 8 – Mt. Lebanon, site to be determined

Why Recycle Glass?

  • Glass bottles and jars are 100 percent recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without any loss in purity or quality.
  • Recycled glass containers always are needed because glass manufacturers require high-quality recycled container glass to meet market demand for new glass containers.
  • Glass containers returned for recycling can be made into new glass bottles and jars that constitute up to 95 percent recycled content.
  • Your glass bottles and jars can go from your recycling bin to the store shelf in as little as 30 days.
  • One ton of carbon dioxide is reduced for every six tons of recycled container glass used in manufacturing.
