Bethel Park plans to complete three flood protection projects this year.

The municipality plans to install additional stormwater infrastructure at two small parks, Oak Tree Park on Summit Street and Birch Tree Park on Forest Road. Underground detention basins will be built at those parks as well as rain gardens.

Bethel Park also plans to upgrade existing infrastructure at the retention pond at the industrial park.

“This should help slow the water down,” municipal Manager Shawn Arbaugh said during the council’s meeting Jan. 14. “It won’t completely solve the problem, but it should help.”

Resident Rich Pahler, whose home sustained heavy damage during the June 20 flood, urged his fellow residents who also suffered from flooding to speak up about the issue. He suggested filling out the Blueprint Bethel Park survey, which is available on the municipal website, www.bethelpark.net.

The projects will be part of the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Program, also known as MS4. The municipality will likely tackle additional projects in the near future, Arbaugh said.

In another matter, residents had until Jan. 15 to chose what size garbage can they would like, as part of new waste hauler agreement. The cans will be delivered in March and residents should start using them by April. Residents can chose their container by mailing back the postcard they should have received last month. Those who have not received a card should call the municipality at 412-831-6800.

Council also promoted two police officers to sergeant to fill recent retirements, Sean McGrail and Colby Grubich.
