Mt. Lebanon middle school honored as ‘School to Watch’

Mellon Middle School in Mt. Lebanon was recognized for its academic performance and organizational acuity this month through a program developed by a cooperative of state and national educational institutions.
The school was named as one of the PA Don Eichhorn Schools’ “Schools to Watch,” one of only three middle schools in the state to receive the designation this term.

The committee of Mellon Middle School teachers who submitted the application for the “Schools to Watch” award were honored at the Jan. 22 Mt. Lebanon School Board meeting.
Leaders from the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform, the Pennsylvania Association for Middle Level Education, Duquesne University and Edinboro University, among others, adjudicate the selection process on the basis of academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structure.
The program is named for the late educator Don Eichhorn, an Upper St. Clair administrator whose doctoral research focused on middle level pedagogy.
“We are very proud of our Mellon students, faculty, staff and administrators on achieving this outstanding recognition,” Superintendent Tim Steinhauer said. “Congratulations on this honor, which highlights our commitment to our mission to provide the best education possible to each and every student.”
Cooperative representatives observe schools that apply to the program and conduct interviews with faculty members. Awards are dolled out on a three-year basis.
Mellon Middle School will be recognized at the Pennsylvania Association for Middle Level Education’s upcoming conference in February, and at the National Forum’s conference in Washington D.C. in June.
Mt. Lebanon school board directors honored the faculty members of Mellon Middle School during a regular meeting on Jan. 22.
