South Hills Interfaith Movement pantries serve record numbers

In June 2019, South Hills Interfaith Movement’s food pantries served more than 1,900 people in 592 households, a record number of neighbors in need.

As the need grows, SHIM continues to work to keep the pantries filled. During the summer, low-income students no longer receive free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch at school, and families are forced to look elsewhere to replace those meals.

The best way to help is by making an online donation, hosting a drive or dropping off a food donation in-person at one of SHIM’s pantries. Nearly 50 percent of the food distributed by the pantries comes from food drives organized by students, community groups, the faith community and neighbors.

SHIM accepts donations of nonperishable food and gently used, in-season and baby clothing at its Bethel Park location, 5301 Park Ave., from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Except for the second and fourth weeks of the month, donations are accepted from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon Fridays.
