Bethel Park

• Bethel Park High School students earned 25 awards on the National French Exams, or Le Grand Concours 2019.

Earning gold medals for scoring in the 95th percentile were French III sophomores Tobias Roule and Marissa Wycinsky and French II freshman Toyosi Egbebi. Junior Caleb Shook earned a silver medal on the French III exam for scoring in the 90th percentile, and freshmen Katherine Cottrill and Allison Scarlett earned a Silver Medal on the French II exam for scoring in the 85th percentile.

Earning Bronze Medals for scoring in the 80th percentile were senior Cameron Sillman on the French V exam; sophomore Weeam Boumaza on the French III exam; and junior Tia Kean, sophomore Marguerite Young and freshman Sadie Fedor on the French II exam. Freshman Riley Hunter earned a Bronze Medal on the French II Exam for scoring in the 75th percentile.

Thirteen students were earned Honorable Mentions for scoring between the 50 and 70th percentiles: seniors Rachel Anischenko and Anton Yanovich, and juniors Madison Becker and Ruth Rubican on the French IV exam; sophomores Madelyn Hoffmann, Abigail Phillips, Rachel Toth and Evan Zelt on the French III exam; and senior Kobe Coleman and freshmen Megan Cunningham, Briauna Harris, Anna Rosemeier and Isabella Zallo on the French II exam.

The students are instructed by Bethel Park High School French teachers Tracy McCoy and Rachael Smith.

• A team of Bethel Park School District elementary gifted students finished third in the CalcuSolve Team Competition held at Brentwood High School.

Members of the team were William Penn third-grader Patrick Gaefke, and Lincoln Elementary fourth-graders Caleb Crawford and Riley Philage. Additionally, Patrick finished second in the individual competition.

The students were prepared for this event by Bethel Park elementary gifted coordinator Lisa Yost.

• The Bethel Park Lions Club presented its $5,000 George Meyer Scholarship to Bethel Park High School graduate Tyler Andreis.

Tyler will attend Penn State University and will enter a five-year master’s program in architectural engineering. He was a member of DECA in high school and his hobbies include photography, traveling, and fishing and hunting.

• The Bethel Park High School German Club awarded freshman Willow Hernishin with a full scholarship to study at the Millersville University Summer German Language Camp.

Willow will study German in a weeklong immersion setting from Aug. 4-10.

The German Club annually presents the scholarship to a student who demonstrates exceptional enthusiasm and dedication to the club and its activities. Willow is an Honors II German student and one of the most active club members.

She served as captain of the club’s “Eintracht Bethel Park” fantasy soccer team and helped to organize the club’s T-shirt fundraiser. She also a member of the Delta Epsilon Phi German National Honor Society.

Her German teacher is Christopher Tobias.

• Jacob Bauer, a junior Honors German III student at Bethel Park High School, received two awards that recognized his achievement in the study of German.

He received the Dietrich Award of Academic Excellence for the 2019-20 school year. The award is annually presented to the Bethel Park High School German student with the highest overall academic achievement during the year.

Jacob also received a certificate of honor as the most outstanding member of the school’s chapter of the Delta Epsilon Phi German National Honor Society.

He is instructed by high school German teacher Christopher Tobias.

• Independence Middle School held its annual eighth-grade awards assembly to recognize students who excelled throughout the academic year:

Upper St. Clair

• A member of the Upper St. Clair High School Class of 2019 has earned a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award. Reese Benonis has been selected to receive the National Merit University of Alabama Scholarship.

Reese, who will attend the University of Alabama in the fall, plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. Throughout his high school career, he has been involved with a variety of STEM activities including serving as founder and captain of the high school’s robotics team. In addition, he serves as a mentor for a younger all-girls robotics team and teaches at both an Odyssey of the Mind camp and youth engineering camps. Reese is also a member of the Upper St. Clair High School crew team.
