• Streams Elementary fourth-graders took action in a big way, raising $840 to benefit six local organizations during a student-led “Snack-tion.”

The students hosted a bake sale during the school’s annual STAR Night in May. They baked and packaged homemade treats and then staffed the bake sale during the schoolwide evening event.

The fundraiser benefitted six organizations that students had researched for their International Baccalaureate-Primary Years Program final exhibition projects.

“This is important because it asks students to take all of their IB skills and knowledge in order to research effectively, and then to use this information to take action in the real world,” Amanda Royer, Streams fourth-grade teacher, said.

The benefiting organizations included ALCOSAN, Grow Pittsburgh, RiverLife, Hollow Oak, PennEnvironment, and Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.

• Charles Stanley, a 2017 Upper St. Clair High School graduate, was selected to start the doctor of pharmacy program beginning in the fall at West Virginia University.

He completed his first two years of undergraduate work at WVU.
