Mt. Lebanon celebrates 13th year as a Tree City USA

Embracing the theme “Trees are as diverse as the people who love them,” Washington Elementary School set the scene for the April 26 celebration of Mt. Lebanon’s status as a Tree City USA.
After a greeting from principal Melissa Nelson and the pledge of allegiance led by local Scout troops, students performed songs with accompaniment from members of the orchestra and band.
Sarah Olbrich, Mt. Lebanon School Board vice president, gave an inspirational speech, and Commissioner Kelly Fraasch read the Tree City USA proclamation.
After a rain delay of a few days, students put their shovels into the ground to welcome the new oak tree to their school yard, thanks to Mt. Lebanon Public Works Department.
Mt. Lebanon has been a Tree City for 13 consecutive years. To achieve Tree City USA status, a community must have a forestry commission, tree care ordinance, budget at least $2 per capita of public funding for forestry and have an annual Arbor Day celebration.
